Amorim: Man Utd Must Avoid Costly Transfer Mistakes to Halt Decline
Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has emphasized the need for smarter recruitment to reverse the club’s struggles, warning against the expensive mistakes that have contributed to their decline.

Since taking charge in November, Amorim has been unable to turn United’s fortunes around, with the club languishing in 15th place in the Premier League. This comes despite the Red Devils spending over £600 million ($760 million) on new signings under former manager Erik ten Hag.

With limited funds in the January transfer window, Amorim’s only signing was Danish defender Patrick Dorgu, as financial constraints led to budget cuts across the board. The club even announced up to 200 job redundancies as part of a broader restructuring plan.

Acknowledging the impact of past recruitment failures, Amorim admitted that improving transfer strategy is crucial for the team’s future.

*"The recruitment is crucial, we need to improve the team. We need to perform better and be in Europe, not in the position we are in now,"* Amorim stated.

The Portuguese coach pointed to United’s misfiring £100 million investment in strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as an example of poor spending decisions. Hojlund, in particular, has struggled, scoring just twice in the league this season, with his last goal coming in December.

However, Amorim defended the young Danish forward, arguing that his struggles are more about the team’s poor creativity than his individual ability.

*"I think it’s clear, we as a team are not helping Rasmus. We don’t create a lot of chances,"* he said. *"He has the potential, but to be a young number nine playing all the time is tough. If we improve our game, he will have more opportunities to score."*

With mounting pressure from fans and stakeholders, Amorim knows that words alone won’t be enough. His challenge now is to rebuild United both tactically and strategically, ensuring the club doesn’t repeat past recruitment errors.
