EPL: Arsenal's Gabriel - to sit out the remaining season over hamstring injury

The Gunners said on Thursday  Gabriel, the 27-year-old Brazilian centre-back, will need urgent surgery on the hamstring injury he suffered from during their 2 to 1 win on Tuesday against Fulham in the premier league.

Gabriel, one of the main defences of the Arsenal starting lineup in recent seasons, was taken down after 16 minutes of play due to the injury at the Emirates stadium and was unable to continue play.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will be hosting the La Liga Giants Real Madrid for their opening leg of their quarterfinal at the Emirates stadium on Tuesday before the return leg the following week.

This has caused a major setback for their Champions League clash with the La Liga giants after it was said that Gabriel will be ruled out for the remaining season.

"We can confirm that Gabriel Magalhaes has sustained a hamstring injury which requires surgery," mentioned an arsenal statement.

Throughout this season, Arsenal has been one of the clubs with the strongest defence in the premier league, having conceded 25 goals in 30 matches and occupying the second spot on the league table with a solid 12 points behind the premier league red stars, Liverpool, with just 8 matches to play.

According to the reports shown, Gabriel Magalhaes is said to be undergoing a surgical repair procedure to sought out his hamstring injury and is said to begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, to be physically and mentally prepared for the upcoming season
