Introduction: Currently, in Nigeria and most parts of the world today, blogging has evolved drastically from just a simple hobby to a reliable source of income for many individuals. With the right strategy, a good niche, and most importantly "consistency", you can earn through many means like Adsense, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, and even product sales and reviews.
If you are interested in pursuing your newly found blogging goal and wondering how to start and actually start making steady income from it, then you are in the right place, today D&B SOCIETY will be providing a complete step by step guide to follow when starting your own blog and how to make it a steady source of income.
Without wasting much time, let's start with the first step you need to take when thinking of starting a blog:
Choose a Profitable Niche:
Choosing a Profitable Niche is a vital or serious first step to follow, cause it is the category or topic your blog will be focused on and it will determine the type of audience or traffic you get, so while picking a niche, pick something you are passionate about, but also make sure it is profitable.
Currently, some major high-paying blog niches include:
- Make Money Online.
- Finance and Business.
- Education and exams (e.g, WAEC, NECO, and JAMB).
- Entertainment and Celebrity gist.
- Tech and reviews.
Always remember to use the Google keyword planner to research topics people are actively searching for in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
The second step to follow after deciding on a niche is-
Get a Domain Name and Hosting for your Blogging Website:
Your domain name is like the address to your blogging community and grants users a way to your online doorstep, so while picking a domain name, go for something short, simple, and easy to remember like www.myblog.com, and make sure it is easily brandable.
For beginners in Nigeria, it is advisable to start with cheaper and affordable domain and hosting providers, and some of these providers include:
- Hostinger - My personal choice cause it seems fast and cheap to me, and some optional features make it really good to use. (This is just a personal opinion; feel Free to do your own research.) Visit Hostinger
- WhoGoHost - They also stand as another preferable hosting provider as it comes with naira payment, which solves the issue of going through complex means to make payments. (Still, make sure to do your own research.) Visit WhoGoHost
- Namecheap and InterServer - These hosting providers are known for their good and responsive support teams. So it is also a good option to consider while thinking of getting a domain name. Visit Namecheap, Visit InterServer
Now, getting a domain name is not just the end; it only takes us down to the third step, which is to:
Set Up Your Blogging Platform:
Currently, the most popular and beginner-friendly blogging platform is WordPress, as it is easily customizable and doesn't need too much or any coding experience. Below is a list of steps to follow while setting up WordPress for the first time:
- Install WordPress from your hosting dashboard.
- Choose a simple theme (e.g, Astra, OceanWP).
- Install plugins for SEO (e.g, Yoast or Rank Math), caching, and security if you prefer PHP or building from scratch.
- But make sure your design is mobile-friendly and fast-loading.
Design a Clean Blog Layout:
When making a blog website, make it easier for readers to navigate. Use a visible menu with your main categories, making it easier for users to select their major interest.
Make a clean homepage with featured posts, sidebars with search bars, recent posts and newsletter forms, and a footer with your contact info and social media links. Keep it minimal; focus on your content.
Write Quality Content Consistently:
Since it is your first time or as a beginner, you don't need to be an expert before you start writing, speaking from experience. You just need to start somewhere. I will be making a post on how I make my post, so make sure to visit our social media pages in order not to miss out on this important detail.
As a beginner, you can start with at least 5-10 well-written blog posts, and each post should be at least 1000+ words long, contain headings (H1, H2, H3), images, and bullet points.
Target one main keyword and use it repeatedly in titles, intro, and headings.
End with a CTA (Commenting, sharing, and reading next for user interaction).
Set Up Monetization:
Once you already have at least 10-15 solid posts and good traffic, you can start earning by many various means.
- Google AdSense: There are various requirements to follow when monetizing with Google, so I suggest you read their terms and conditions and make sure you meet the requirements before applying.
- Affiliate Marketing: You can also promote products for major firms like Konga, Jumia, Amazon, and many others and start earning.
- Sponsored posts: Work hard and make sure you get noticed by small brands or build an audience on social media.
- Info product: Sell eBooks, courses, or templates to generate income.
Promote Your Blog For Free:
No traffic, no money, no problem. You can start by sharing your posts on your social media platforms to receive visits.
Post on WhatsApp status and channels including groups if allowed by the admins, also on Facebook groups, Twitter (currently know as X), threads, Instagram stories or reels, Nairaland ir relevant, and also invest in basic SEO by submitting your blog to the Google search engine and even bing webmaster tools, use internal links between your posts and get backlinks from forums or related blogs.
Stay Consistent and Learn:
As mentioned before, CONSISTENCY is very important when it comes to blogging, and it's a secret weapon, so set a schedule even if it is just 2 posts per week, keep upgrading your knowledge through learning from YouTube videos, blogging forums, and other successful bloggers online.
Conclusion:
Starting a blog in Nigeria may seem easy, but turning it into a profitable and major source of income requires serious strategy and effort.
Follow these steps, stay focused, and always upgrade your knowledge, and your blog will become a full-time income stream in 2025 and beyond.
