**Lagos Assembly Crisis: Meranda Insists on Stepping Down Only in Plenary**
LAGOS — Fresh indications have emerged that Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, may step down from her position, but only under the condition that it happens during a plenary session, Vanguard has learned.
The House had adjourned indefinitely on Monday, February 17, after 36 out of 40 members passed a vote of confidence in Meranda’s leadership.
Following the intervention of key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a resolution was reached for Meranda to vacate her position, allowing Lagos West to produce the next Speaker.
Multiple sources disclosed that while Meranda has agreed to resign, the process must be conducted during plenary.
It was further gathered that she may be reinstated as Deputy Speaker once she steps down.
One source stated: *“If the Speaker is to resign, it must happen in plenary when the House reconvenes. There is a procedure for such matters, and due process must be followed.”*
The source further noted that until plenary is resumed, the situation remains unchanged, and no definite timeline has been set for the House to reconvene.
Another insider confirmed that the APC has sent a delegation from Abuja to mediate in the crisis, with expectations that normalcy will return soon.
*“Efforts are in place to restore peace in the Assembly. Senior party leaders, including former APC National Chairman Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and NNPC Board Chairman Pius Akinyelure, have stepped in to mediate,”* the source revealed.
Over the weekend, key stakeholders held an initial meeting with House principal officers and members, with follow-up discussions expected soon.
Meanwhile, the Speakership has been zoned to Lagos West, with eight lawmakers shortlisted as potential successors.
The candidates include Setonji David (Badagry Constituency 2), Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1), Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1), Adedamola Kasunmu (Ikeja 2), Lukman Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1), Wale Rauf Sulaimon (Mushin 2), Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 1), and Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo 2).
